10 reason's to love a skinny, needle-nosed, pooch
4 years after saving our greyhound, Digger (handsome isn't he?) I am prepared to argue that greyhounds come pretty close to the perfect pet. If you're thinking about adopting a dog into your life, take a few moments and ponder this:
1. Greyhounds come fully trained, with perfect manners - Having spent their lives on the track, most rescued greyhounds are totally housetrained, extremely well mannered on a leash, completely crate trained, and used to eating a few times a day.
2. You are saving your greyhound from near certain death - nuff said
3. Greyhounds are fabulous apartment dogs - If you have space for a soft dog bed, you're in business. Hounds are used to being in a crate most of the time, and don't really need alot of space. Many folks keep their greyhounds crated even after they are adopted, but due to his excellent house manners, Digger gets free reign in our abode.
4. Greyhounds don't need alot of exercise to be happy - Most people won't believe this when you tell them, but greyhounds are total couch potatoes. Although they are used to racing, they are bred for bursts of engery (aka sprints) and not for endurance. As such, they really only require one average walk per day (and the requisite potty breaks). In fact, we once took Digger on a 5K run and he pretty much died at mile 2.
5. Hounds have hassle-free, short hair - Soft as a newborn babe's
6. Greyhounds are guaranteed to attract a fan club - If you get a greyhound you will make lots of new friends. This can be extremely useful for meeting new neighbors, getting dates, making nice with local police, making nice with the local homeless, and generally feeling superior to other dog owners.
7. Greyhounds have extremely loving and gentle temperaments - Greyhounds love people and children. Your hound will likely follow you around the house, sit at your feet, lean on you for petting, stare at you fondly, and spoon you at night (if you'll let them).
8. Greyhounds have good vision - As members of the sighthound family, greyhounds hunt primarily using their vision, not their sense of smell. Handy for spotting, rabbits, squirrels, and other varmints. More practically, greyhounds don't much acknowledge what they can't see...this makes them very quiet in the house.
9. Greyhounds don't (initially) like people food - Because your hound is used to a very regimented environment, they won't show much interest in "your" stuff unless you give it to them. If you find your greyhound chomping down leftover pizza, the blame is likely on you, my friend.
10. Personality, personality, personality - This is a dog that will keep you laughing. I have listed my favorite greyhound "isms" below:
Hound eccentricities
> loves to collect stuff from around the house and build a nest upon which to rest
> will literally let you do anything to it without complaint (important for those who like their dogs to star in holiday cards)
> the turkey pose
> will respond to a squirrel call

Many impressive reasons to get a greyhound...but a standard poodle should also be right up there for consideration. Perhaps I will make my own list with the requisite adorable picture.
A friend of mine adopted a former racing greyhound. For some reason, I had assumed they were aggresive dogs, but this was the friendliest pup I ever saw. I am now a big fan of the breed. Great hub.
Enjoy your Digger. 12 years with my Speedy went by way too fast. I volunteer with Greyhound rescue and although my dog was all those things you mentioned and I absolutely adored him, a greyhound is not for everyone. If you want a star obedience dog or a dedicated guard dog look elsewhere. Speedy would have let a burglar take anything as long as the thief didn't touch "his" couch and dog treats!
Thank you so much for making a brilliant article about Greyhound.I care very much about greyhounds
Hi, Ames! You're Digger sure is one very fabulous dog and it shows in his pictures! It's just quite heart-breaking to know that there are owners out there who would abandon these animals when they feel they don't have no use of them anymore! I really despise those people! Fortunately, the Good Lord provides for them! My family also find them so adorable. Maybe that's why my mom have her own Greyhound Checks and other stuff that has Greyhound pictures on them but I'm just wondering why we have a Daschsund instead of a Greyhound. I jsut hope my mom would surprise us one day with a Greyhound of our own.
Great Hub you have here :) Please check out my Belfast Maine website would love to network!
Great Hub! Rescuing my beautiful fawn grey, Lola is the best thing I ever did. They are indeed the perfect pet. So many myths about these beautiful, sweet, soulful, and loyal companions.
never read a better piece on a dog before!!! I’m very impressed!! and you are very lucky to have very special dogs there who are so very lucky to have you...
Love your article. I have had my greyhound for over 5 years, and she's the best. Greyhounds can be aloof, and it took a little while to bond with mine. But now, we're bonded forever. I love when she leans on me, puts her head on my lap, or gives me the "play with me" butt wiggle. And she's so well behaved that she spoils me. She never, ever takes anything that's not hers (even when I drop food while cooking, she won't take it), she rarely barks, she waits patiently while I fix her food, and she (now) listens to me on walks. Greyhounds aren't for everyone... She can be a little shy, and she's nervous with other dogs... but with the right owner, they're wonderful.
My 5 year old greyhound, Scott, is the best guy ever! We love him like crazy. He IS a total couch potato in the house, but his endurance is atypical (maybe) for a greyhound. He can run 10 miles with me and my husband, and we took him on a 38 mile backpacking trip last fall. I'm so glad we got a greyhound who is able to do these things with us! Maybe all greyhounds are capable of this sort of exercise with proper conditioning? We definitely had to work him up to it! Anyway, I just took him on a 25 minute walk around the neighborhood and he is passed out on the rug. What a good boy!

Last week I overheard this conversation while out with diggy...
Child:"look mom a deer!".
Mom: "no honey, that's a dog."
Child: "No it's a deer!"
Mom: "OK, it's a deer"
